Kyle finished

Don't know if you can see a difference but I did add quite a bit more as far as color and deepening the darks. Changed the background blue to a cooler shade to play off the warm lights in the face.  I also realized that the picture plane was divided almost exactly in half in the original version so I cropped it in the photograph.  Let me know your thoughts on that or anything else about it.  Again this is watercolor and gouache on 500 ply Bristol Plate and is  11X17 inches.

It looks just like him or the way he used to look before he chopped off his hair. You are amazing my dear friend. Love you!

I like the way you've cropped it. I think this is an amazing portrait. Soft, yet defined. The light notes on the shirt, through the hair and on the skin are excellent.
and with watercolor/gouache! Wonderful painting.

Hi Manon, Thanks so much! Love your new inktense paintings!

Hi Jan, Thanks! I guess you should know, since he's your neighbor! LOL! Love you too, thanks for stopping by!

Thanks Dale, glad you agree with the cropping. I am really enjoying working with the gouache.

Jeb, thanks! can't wait to see some more progress on that painting on your new easel!

Joancoch, Thank you! and you are welcome! It is a great photograph!

Thanks Margaret, always a pleasure to see you. I had a great time perusing your new drawings.

Hi AK, Welcome. Thanks. Yes, I get a little distracted. I have settled down quite a bit, as I keep everything mostly in the painting realm these days. LOL!

Thanks Don! cleverly put! Peace be with you.

Hi Sam, thank you! wish I could capture that lovely atmosphere you get in your paintings!

Welcome Alexiev, and thanks.

oh good grief, i just wrote a long comment and then blogger ate it...

tonya, kyle is truly his own self now it seems to me. this time i don't see jesus, i see kyle. i love his eye (you made a subtle change, i think, and i love it), skin, and hair - and i'm so impressed that i immediately see dreads this time, whereas last time i saw long hair! the cropping made a huge difference - it's a good reminder for me to keep that in mind because it changes everything.

i can hardly believe this is watercolor and guache...

I love your painting. I also liked it before you cropped it. It gave it space. I too struggle with the old school training of not dividing the picture plane in half, but why not? In this day and age does it matter? If it the composition works and it creates a wonderful tension then I say leave it if you choose to do so.

Hi Lynne, thanks so much for your kind observations. I so enjoy your blog and your wonderful situational art and your fabulous faces!

Mr. Green fingers, nice to see you here. Long time.I so enjoy your writings! I think Kyle is your kind of guy. I can see you two having a beer together. Actually kyle is a plant guy himself and has all kinds of garden friends growing at his house as we speak. (so to speak) LOL!

Eva, Thanks for visiting my blog. Yes there is the idea of "I will do what I want to do" but you can't argue with what feels right and what feels wrong. You can plainly see that the format doesn't work. I would have rather had more space to correct the discrepancy but alas, I didn't leave more space. Although.... maybe if I painted into the margins....Hmmm, I will have to look at that. I would really like to have the bigger space in front as that is what I was going for originally. Thanks for your comment. Cheers, Tonya
